What is expected of a Councillor?
Councillors are elected to develop local policy, represent the interests and concerns of local residents, and provide a vision and direction for the future growth of the community. Taking on the role of Councillor means a considerable investment of your time, energy, and commitment, but the satisfaction of serving your community and playing a key role in its development can be very rewarding.
Councillors are expected to attend the regular meetings of Council, which occur generally twice per month (approximately 2 to 2.5 hours in duration) throughout the year, as well as Planning and Priorities committee meetings generally once per month (approximately 1.5 to 3 hours in duration). These meetings require review of the agenda materials prior to the meetings – e.g. correspondence, reports, newsletters, committee minutes – which can involve several hours of reading each time.
Apart from the these more formal meetings of Council, Councillors are also expected to sit on various internal and external committees and boards that help to provide direction for our municipality’s administration, beautification, arts and culture, education, recreation, safety, and economic development.
