Culture & Heritage

Dauphin has a rich tapestry of history with many cultures woven together to form a colourful and vibrant community. Originally established as a fur trading post, Dauphin has grown to a thriving society, proud of its roots.

The first Aboriginal inhabitants lived in the area for thousands of years hunting bison, fishing and foraging for berries, roots and herbs. Following a boom in the fur trade, frontier settlers of Scottish and English descent moved to the area. When the railway came at the turn of the century, European settlers, predominantly from Eastern Europe and Ukraine, began farming the land.

Dauphin has preserved much of its history in museums, parks and monuments. It is home to several provincial or national historic sites such as the Historic Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection, Trembowla Cross of Freedom, the CNR Station and the Watson Art Centre across the street. The community of Sifton has preserved many aspects of its past with five different sites to visit in the small community.

Wrap yourself in the warmth of the rich fabric that makes Dauphin the picturesque community it is and visit one of the many sites we are so proud of.
