This past weekend marked 49 years of Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival in Dauphin, Manitoba. At Friday evenings opening ceremonies, Mayor Eric Irwin announced the City of Dauphin’s commemorative gift – a bronze monument called, “The Young Pioneers”, which will be ready for the 50th anniversary, in 2015. The statue is a young Ukrainian pioneer couple holding bread and a bible, looking to the future with optimism. The statue will be one in a planned series of historic statues to be placed in key locations throughout the community, celebrating the rich culture and history of Dauphin.
