Mosquito Control
The City of Dauphin manages mosquito populations through a larviciding program carried out by Dauphin Recreation Services (DRS).
The program targets mosquito larvae before they mature into adult mosquitoes, helping reduce overall populations and the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses such as West Nile virus.
Larviciding is focused on areas of standing water, such as ditches and other locations where mosquitoes are known to breed. The timing and frequency of treatment depend on weather conditions, particularly rainfall.
A biological larvicide containing Bacillus thuringienis israelensis (Bti) is used. This product is widely used for mosquito control and is considered low risk to people, pets, and other wildlife when applied as directed.

How Residents Can Help:
Residents can play an important role in reducing mosquito populations by eliminating standing water around their property:
- Empty and clean items that collect water (bird baths, buckets, toys, plant trays)
- Keep eavestroughs clear and ensure proper drainage
- Cover rain barrels with a fine screen
- Remove or store unused containers and debris
- Maintain yards by keeping grass and vegetation trimmed
Tick Awareness
Ticks are found throughout Manitoba. The two most common types are the American dog tick (wood tick) and the blacklegged tick (deer tick).
While most ticks in Manitoba are wood ticks and are primarily a nuisance, blacklegged ticks can carry bacteria that cause Lyme disease.
Ticks are commonly found in wooded areas, tall grass, and brush, particularly during the warmer months.
The City of Dauphin does not conduct tick control. Residents are encouraged to take precautions when spending time outdoors, including checking for ticks after spending time outside.
